Anthropic Secures $580M to Advance Safe AI Research
AI research firm Anthropic raises $580 million in a Series B round led by FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried to advance AI safety and scaling laws. The company plans to expand its team and explore the societal impacts of machine learning.
Artificial intelligence research company Anthropic raises $580 million in a Series B funding round led by FTX Trading Ltd. founder Sam Bankman-Fried. The startup, launched in 2020 by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei, currently employs a 40-person team focused on building better neural networks and publishing academic research.
Anthropic focuses heavily on AI safety by developing large-scale models with improved safeguards and ways to verify those protections. The company also prioritizes research into scaling laws, exploring how an AI model's configuration, performance, and training data interconnect to find more efficient neural network training methods.
The new funding allows Anthropic to grow its headcount and establish dedicated teams to research the policy and societal impacts of emerging AI models. Co-founder Dario Amodei states the company explores both the predictable scaling properties of machine learning systems and the unpredictable ways safety issues emerge at scale.
