Anthropic Unveils Claude 3.7 Sonnet as First Hybrid Reasoning Model
Anthropic releases Claude 3.7 Sonnet, a hybrid model that seamlessly switches between instant answers and visible step-by-step reasoning. The company also introduces Claude Code, an agentic terminal tool for developers.
Anthropic launches Claude 3.7 Sonnet as its most intelligent model to date and the first hybrid reasoning model on the market. This new model functions as both a standard large language model and an advanced reasoning system, allowing users to choose between near-instant responses and extended, step-by-step thinking. Unlike other reasoning models that exist as separate systems, Claude 3.7 Sonnet integrates both capabilities into a single unified model to create a seamless user experience.
The model shows particularly strong improvements in coding and front-end web development tasks. Alongside the model release, Anthropic introduces Claude Code, a limited research preview command line tool that enables developers to delegate substantial engineering tasks directly from their terminal. API users receive fine-grained control over the model, including the ability to set a specific token budget for how long the model thinks before responding.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet is available now across all Claude plans, including Free, Pro, Team, and Enterprise, as well as through the Claude Developer Platform, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. The extended thinking mode is accessible on all paid surfaces, while the standard mode serves as a direct upgrade to Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Pricing remains highly competitive at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, with thinking tokens included in the output cost.
