Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 Arrive in GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot now integrates Anthropic's latest hybrid thinking models, Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4, for enhanced coding workflows. Opus 4 is available for Enterprise and Pro+ users, while Sonnet 4 is accessible across all paid plans.

Anthropic’s latest AI models, Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4, are now generally available in GitHub Copilot. These new additions serve as hybrid thinking models that handle extended thinking alongside tool use and logical summaries. Both models also include vision capabilities, allowing developers to chat about images directly within their workflow.

Claude Opus 4 stands out as Anthropic’s most powerful model to date, excelling at complex problem-solving and powering sophisticated frontier AI agents. Claude Sonnet 4 succeeds the popular Claude Sonnet 3.7 and offers an ideal balance of performance and practicality for everyday coding tasks.

Access to these models varies by subscription tier, with Claude Sonnet 4 available to all paid GitHub Copilot plans and Opus 4 restricted to Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ plans. Developers can select these models through the chat model picker in GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com, VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Eclipse, and GitHub Mobile. Enterprise administrators need to enable access manually through a new policy in Copilot settings before the models appear for their users.
