Anysphere Acquires Supermaven to Boost Cursor's AI Coding Capabilities
The maker of the AI code editor Cursor buys Supermaven to improve its autocomplete technology with faster, context-aware models.
Anysphere, the startup behind the popular AI-powered code editor Cursor, acquires AI coding assistant Supermaven for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move brings Supermaven's founder Jacob Jackson, who previously co-founded Tabnine, into the Anysphere fold to accelerate product development.
The acquisition allows Anysphere to launch an upgraded version of its Tab AI model that handles long sequences of code with impressive speed and intelligence. Supermaven's custom-built Babble model provides extremely low-latency performance and a deep understanding of large codebases, which enhances Cursor's existing capabilities.
This deal occurs as major venture capital firms offer unsolicited investments that value Anysphere at up to $2.5 billion. By combining forces, the Supermaven team shifts its focus entirely to Cursor, enabling the developers to co-design the user interface and the underlying AI models for a more integrated coding experience.
