Apple Blocks Cloud Gaming Services Like xCloud From iOS Devices

Apple confirms it prohibits game streaming platforms like xCloud and Stadia from the App Store due to its requirement for individual game reviews. The company suggests developers can bypass the restriction by offering these services through web browsers instead.

Apple officially blocks game streaming services like Microsoft xCloud and Google Stadia from iOS devices. The tech giant states that all games must submit individually for review to ensure customer protection and maintain a fair environment for developers. This strict policy prevents cloud gaming platforms from existing as single, all-in-one applications on the App Store.

The restriction heavily impacts the iOS gaming experience compared to Android. While Android users enjoy access to over 80 streamed games during xCloud testing, iOS testers only receive access to a single title with a strict cap of 10,000 participants. Apple suggests that developers can still reach iPhone and iPad users by routing their streaming services through Safari and other web browsers.

Industry leaders react strongly to this decision, with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney accusing Apple of outlawing the metaverse. Sweeney argues that if Apple applies this principle literally, it threatens not only cloud gaming platforms but also popular cross-platform ecosystems and user-generated games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox.
