Apple Brings AI Visual Search to iPhone 16 Via New Camera Button

Apple introduces visual intelligence for the iPhone 16, allowing users to identify objects and extract text using a dedicated camera button. The feature leverages Google Search and OpenAI's ChatGPT while prioritizing user privacy.

Apple introduces a new AI-powered visual search feature called visual intelligence for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Users activate this tool using the new Camera Control button, which functions as a smart reverse image search with text recognition capabilities. The system instantly provides useful information about everyday objects, such as pulling up restaurant hours, ratings, and menus when a user points their camera at a dining establishment.

The feature integrates directly with Google Search to provide accurate results and offers seamless productivity boosts for everyday tasks. For instance, pointing the camera at an event flier automatically extracts the title, time, date, and location to add directly to the user's calendar. Additionally, through a partnership with OpenAI, users have the option to route their visual queries to ChatGPT for more complex problems like homework assistance.

Apple emphasizes that visual intelligence respects user privacy by ensuring that no images are ever stored by the company's services. The tool launches in beta this October exclusively for U.S. English language users, with broader international availability following in December and early 2025. This rollout aligns with the broader deployment schedule for the Apple Intelligence suite of AI capabilities.
