Apple Brings Battery Health Management to Macs in Catalina 10.15.5

Apple introduces a new Battery Health Management feature in macOS Catalina 10.15.5 to extend the lifespan of MacBook batteries. Unlike the iPhone version, this feature works by preventing the laptop from charging to full capacity in certain situations.

Apple introduces a new Battery Health Management feature in the macOS Catalina 10.15.5 beta, bringing battery preservation tools to Mac notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 ports for the first time. This new functionality aims to extend the overall lifespan of a Mac's battery by actively reducing the rate of chemical aging.

The feature analyzes the battery's health and the user's charging patterns to make dynamic adjustments. If a Mac remains plugged in and the battery stays at full capacity for extended periods, the system prevents the battery from charging to 100 percent to avoid long-term damage.

Unlike the controversial iPhone version that slows down processor speeds, the Mac implementation solely limits the maximum charge level to protect the hardware. Users who prefer a full charge can easily disable this feature in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences once the final version of macOS Catalina 10.15.5 launches.
