Apple Brings Mandarin-Speaking HomePod to China Amid Economic Headwinds

Apple is releasing the HomePod in China and Hong Kong with native Mandarin and Cantonese support. The premium smart speaker faces an uphill battle against cheap local rivals and a slowing Chinese economy.

Apple expands its smart speaker availability to Mainland China and Hong Kong starting January 18. The device stands out from previously imported models because it supports Mandarin and Cantonese, allowing users to interact with Siri in their native languages. It also integrates with popular local music streaming services like Tencent's QQ Music and JOOX through AirPlay.

The HomePod enters a highly competitive market dominated by affordable local alternatives. While Apple's speaker costs 2,799 yuan, approximately $414, Chinese consumers have access to much cheaper options from tech giants like Alibaba, Xiaomi, and Baidu. This premium pricing strategy mirrors the challenges Apple currently faces with iPhone sales in the region.

Apple's timing presents additional challenges as the Chinese economy experiences a notable slowdown. The company recently lowers its quarterly revenue forecast for the first time in over a decade, largely due to weak Chinese sales and high product prices. It remains unclear whether Chinese shoppers are willing to pay a premium for the HomePod's audio quality over the budget-friendly smart speakers already flooding the local market.
