Apple Introduces FaceTime SharePlay for Synchronized Media Viewing
Apple unveils SharePlay, a new FaceTime feature that lets users watch videos and listen to music together in sync while video chatting. The upcoming tool also brings web-based FaceTime support to Android and Windows users.
Apple unveils a new FaceTime feature called SharePlay that allows multiple users to watch videos or listen to music together in perfect sync while video chatting. This co-viewing experience aims to bridge the physical distance between friends and family by letting them share digital media in real time.
The company plans to release SharePlay as part of iOS 15, the major operating system update scheduled to launch in the fall of 2021 for iPhone 6s and newer models. Users simply start a FaceTime call and open a supported streaming app to instantly share their screen and audio with everyone on the call.
In addition to SharePlay, Apple introduces a web-based version of FaceTime that opens the platform to non-Apple devices. This expansion allows iPhone users to connect and use the new synchronized playback features with friends on Android smartphones or Windows PCs through Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers.
