Apple Prepares to Unveil 'Apple Intelligence' AI Features at WWDC
Apple is set to reveal a new AI system called Apple Intelligence at WWDC, bringing opt-in tools to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. The features will require modern hardware and will handle basic tasks directly on the device.
Apple plans to introduce a new AI system called "Apple Intelligence" during its WWDC keynote on June 10. This opt-in feature set arrives across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, meaning users choose whether to participate. Due to the heavy processing requirements, the AI tools only work on the iPhone 15 Pro, upcoming iPhone 16 models, and iPads or Macs with at least an M1 chip.
The system handles basic AI tasks directly on the device using the onboard processor instead of relying on the cloud. Apple Intelligence includes code that automatically determines if a request processes locally or requires Apple's servers. For more complex queries, a partnership with OpenAI powers a ChatGPT-like chatbot to assist users.
These AI capabilities span numerous first-party apps to improve daily workflows. Users see auto-generated playlists in Apple Music, email summaries and smart replies in Mail, custom emoji in Messages, and web page summaries in Safari. Additional enhancements include audio transcriptions in Notes and Voice Memos, notification summaries, and a significantly smarter, ChatGPT-inspired version of Siri arriving in 2025.
