The first beta of iOS 13.4 reveals a new "CarKey" API that allows users to unlock, lock, and start NFC-compatible vehicles using just an iPhone or Apple Watch. The system works similarly to Express Transit Cards, meaning drivers simply hold their device near the car's reader without needing to authenticate with Face ID. This express mode ensures the feature remains functional even if the iPhone or Apple Watch loses battery power.
Users set up the digital key through the Wallet app by placing their iPhone on the car's NFC reader during the initial pairing process, which requires the vehicle manufacturer's companion app. Once configured, the CarKey automatically appears in the Wallet app and seamlessly syncs to the Apple Watch. If the automatic pairing process fails for any reason, the system provides a fallback option that allows users to manually add the key using a PIN code.
A highly convenient aspect of the CarKey feature is the ability to share digital keys with other people, such as family members. Drivers send these shared keys directly through the Wallet app or via iMessage in one-on-one conversations, granting recipients unlock and lock access on their own Apple devices. While Apple is reportedly working with car manufacturers to implement this technology, the feature will likely not be widely available until iOS 13.4 officially launches to the public.
