Apple Races to Close AI Smartphone Gap With Samsung and Google
As Samsung and Google lead the AI smartphone market with new generative features, Apple is preparing its own response through partnerships and in-house technology to catch up.
Samsung and Google currently lead the AI smartphone race as they actively integrate generative artificial intelligence into their latest flagship devices. Samsung's Galaxy S24 series features the comprehensive Galaxy AI suite, while Google's Pixel 8 utilizes the tailored Gemini Nano model to bring advanced capabilities directly to users. This rapid adoption highlights a major industry shift, as manufacturers rush to enhance smartphone functionality through powerful AI tools.
Apple faces significant pressure to catch up to these aggressive competitors, prompting a multi-pronged strategy to introduce artificial intelligence into its own ecosystem. For the Chinese market, Apple partners with Baidu to integrate the Ernie generative AI model into the upcoming iPhone 16, iOS 18, and MacOS to comply with local regulations. For the rest of the world, Apple relies on its own proprietary technology rather than third-party solutions.
The tech giant reportedly develops an in-house large language model called Ajax, which internally powers an employee-only chatbot known as Apple GPT. Apple is now working to bring this underlying technology to consumer applications, exploring text auto-summarization and auto-completion for Pages, generative features for Keynote presentations, and AI-assisted tools for the Xcode development environment.
