Apple releases the latest developer beta versions of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, bringing a wave of new Apple Intelligence features to brave testers. This update arrives just a week before the public launch of iOS 18.1, which introduces the first non-beta Apple Intelligence tools like writing aids, image cleanup, and a typing input for Siri. Users who opt into the developer beta get an early look at even more advanced capabilities that Apple originally unveiled at WWDC.
The new beta prominently features deep ChatGPT integration through two primary avenues. When Siri encounters a question it cannot answer, such as complex recipe requests or trip planning, the system asks for user permission to query OpenAI's platform. Additionally, a Compose tool within Apple's Writing Tools allows users to enter text prompts to generate content directly inside first-party and many third-party applications, complete with access to ChatGPT's image generation abilities.
Alongside the third-party AI integration, Apple introduces its own Image Playground feature across Messages, Pages, Keynote, and a standalone app. This tool generates images from text prompts, descriptions, or photos of friends and family, specifically utilizing animation and illustration styles to avoid the ethical issues of photorealism. The system relies on licensed content and publicly crawled websites for training, while offering publishers a way to opt out of having their data used.
