Apple Releases Vision Pro SDK Ahead of Early 2024 Headset Launch
Apple releases its visionOS software development kit, giving developers the tools to build spatial computing apps for the upcoming Vision Pro headset. The early release aims to ensure a robust App Store by the time the $3,500 device hits the market.
Apple releases its visionOS software development kit, allowing developers to start building spatial computing apps for the upcoming Vision Pro headset. The SDK arrives roughly half a year before the $3,500 device officially goes on sale in early 2024. Apple is relying on early developer engagement to build excitement and ensure a fully stocked App Store after the headset receives a somewhat lukewarm reception at WWDC.
The new toolkit leverages familiar frameworks like Xcode, SwiftUI, RealityKit, and ARKit to lower the barrier to entry for existing Apple developers. This approach makes it easy for creators to port their current software into the new 3D space using tools like Reality Composer Pro. Apps launch into a Shared Space by default, where users view multiple windows side-by-side, or they can open a Full Space for a completely immersive 3D experience.
Content availability remains a historic challenge for VR and AR platforms, so Apple is taking proactive steps to prevent a sparse app ecosystem at launch. The company is also scheduling in-person developer labs next month to provide hands-on support. Questions still linger about how effectively traditional 2D apps will translate to an infinite 3D canvas, but Apple is clearly intent on making the transition as smooth as possible.
