Apple Reportedly Builds Modular Over-Ear Headphones to Rival Bose and Sony
Apple is developing high-end, over-ear noise-cancelling headphones that feature a unique modular design with magnetically attached components. The upcoming headphones promise seamless cross-device connectivity and a retro aesthetic.
Apple is developing premium over-ear noise-cancelling headphones to compete directly with top models from Bose and Sony. According to a new report, these high-end headphones borrow the successful wireless technology found in the AirPods Pro, including active noise cancellation, touch controls, and seamless cross-device connectivity for iOS and Mac users.
The upcoming headphones feature a distinctive retro look with oval ear cups and thin headband arms, but their standout feature is a modular design. Users are able to easily swap out the ear pads and headband cushions using magnetic connectors, allowing for customizable accessories tailored to specific activities like intense workouts or extended listening sessions.
While Apple already offers over-ear options through its Beats brand with similar smart features, these new headphones are reportedly not Beats-branded and introduce an entirely new level of physical customization to Apple's audio lineup. Although a release is potentially slated for later this year, the ongoing global pandemic and Apple's typical shipping adjustments make the exact launch timeline uncertain.
