Apple confirms that macOS Big Sur launches this Thursday, bringing the biggest visual overhaul to the Mac operating system in years. The release coincides with the debut of Apple's new M1-powered Macs.
Apple officially announces that macOS Big Sur launches on Thursday, November 12, coinciding with the introduction of the first M1-powered Mac computers. The new operating system represents the most significant design update to the Mac interface since the debut of Mac OS X.
The update brings a completely refreshed aesthetic that includes curved window corners, a translucent dock, and uniformly shaped squircle app icons. Users also see a revamped menu bar that offers quick access to a customizable Control Center, along with a redesigned Notification Center that features interactive notifications and iOS-style widgets.
In addition to visual changes, Big Sur delivers major improvements to several native Apple applications. Safari runs faster and consumes less battery, Messages gains inline replies and mentions, and Maps adds Look Around and indoor maps features alongside enhanced capabilities in Photos and Apple Music.
