Apple introduces the Vision Pro, a high-end mixed-reality headset that allows users to navigate apps using their eyes and hands. The device launches early next year and features major partnerships with Disney and Unity.
Apple unveils the Vision Pro, a $3,499 mixed-reality headset that represents the company's first major new product category since the Apple Watch in 2014. The device allows users to view and interact with digital apps spread across the physical spaces around them. People navigate this spatial computing environment simply by using their eyes, hands, and voice instead of traditional controllers.
The headset provides a highly immersive experience for both entertainment and productivity, enabling users to watch 3D movies with spatial audio, play video games, and run work applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Lightroom. A unique feature called EyeSight makes the headset transparent or opaque to let people nearby know if the user is available to interact. The Vision Pro also generates realistic digital avatars for users during video calls.
Apple secures significant third-party support for the new platform, with Disney CEO Bob Iger confirming that Disney+ is available on the device from day one. A partnership with game development platform Unity causes the company's stock to spike over 20% during the announcement. Although Apple stock drops roughly 1% following the presentation, the Vision Pro establishes a bold new direction for the tech giant as it hits the market early next year.
