Apple Unveils Apple Intelligence and Major Software Updates at WWDC 2024
Apple introduces "Apple Intelligence," a suite of AI tools for writing and image generation, alongside major updates like iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. These new AI features will initially be limited to newer devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro and M-series-powered Macs and iPads.
Apple introduces Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, marking its official entry into the generative AI space. This new system brings AI-assisted tools for writing, image editing, and content organization to compatible devices later this year. A standout feature called Image Playground allows users to create custom graphics from text prompts, while Genmoji offers personalized emoji generation.
These AI capabilities come with strict hardware requirements, as they only work on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Macs or iPads powered by Apple's M-series chips. Processing happens directly on the device for many tasks to protect user privacy, though more complex requests route through secure Apple servers. The company emphasizes that it does not store or view any data related to Apple Intelligence activities.
Beyond AI, Apple reveals significant updates across its entire software ecosystem. iOS 18 brings highly customizable home screens, the ability to lock individual apps with Face ID, and redesigned core apps like Photos and Messages. iPadOS 18 finally adds a built-in calculator app and a floating toolbar, while macOS Sequoia introduces new Continuity features that let users control their iPhones directly from their Macs.
