Apple Unveils M1 Chip to Power New Arm-Based Macs
Apple introduces the M1, its first custom Arm-based silicon designed to bring iPhone-level efficiency and performance to the Mac lineup.
Apple officially unveils the M1 chip, the first processor in its new Apple Silicon family designed specifically for the Mac. Built on a 5nm process, this Arm-based processor marks a major shift away from Intel hardware and promises a huge leap in both performance and power efficiency for the company's laptops and desktops.
The M1 features an eight-core CPU divided into four high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. Apple claims the chip delivers industry-leading performance per watt, with the efficiency cores alone matching the speed of the current dual-core Intel-based MacBook Air. On the graphics side, the processor includes up to an eight-core GPU that reaches 2.6 teraflops of peak performance, which Apple touts as the fastest integrated laptop graphics in the world.
In addition to standard processing and graphics capabilities, the M1 integrates Apple's dedicated neural engine to accelerate machine learning workloads. This new architecture succeeds the A12Z chip that previously powered Apple's developer transition kits and establishes the Mac as a serious contender in the Arm-based laptop market alongside devices like Microsoft's Surface lineup.
