Apple Unveils Vision Pro Headset to Pioneer Spatial Computing Era
Apple introduces the Vision Pro, a $3,499 mixed-reality headset that relies on eye and hand tracking instead of traditional controllers. The device features dual 4K displays and runs on a new operating system called visionOS.
Apple officially reveals the Vision Pro, a highly anticipated mixed-reality headset that introduces users to spatial computing. Priced at $3,499, the standalone device operates entirely without dedicated controllers by relying on voice commands, hand tracking, and eye gestures. A unique exterior display feature called EyeSight even allows people in the real world to see the wearer's facial expressions.
The headset boasts a lightweight, custom aluminum design with a separate external battery to minimize strain on the user's head. It delivers stunning visuals through dual 4K micro-OLED displays containing a combined 23 million pixels, while spatial audio pods built into the interchangeable headband provide immersive sound. A digital crown on the side allows users to seamlessly adjust their level of immersion between virtual and augmented reality.
Powering the Vision Pro is a combination of Apple's M2 chip and a brand new R1 processor, which work together to deliver virtually lag-free performance on the new visionOS platform. Users access a dedicated version of the App Store to download compatible software and use familiar apps like Safari alongside their physical surroundings. Although designed primarily for home use, Apple indicates the device eventually expands beyond the living room.
