Apple Unveils Vision Pro Headset, Ushering in Era of Spatial Computing
Apple reveals its long-rumored mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, after seven years of development. The device focuses heavily on augmented reality and introduces a new "spatial computing" paradigm.
Apple officially unveils the Vision Pro headset at WWDC 2023, marking the end of a seven-year development cycle and delivering a rare "one more thing" moment. Unlike previous rumors that leaned heavily into virtual reality, the system focuses primarily on augmented reality and introduces a new interaction paradigm the company calls "spatial computing." Apple CEO Tim Cook states that the device frees users from the limitations of a traditional display, treating the headset itself as a new kind of input device similar to a mouse or trackpad.
The hardware features an aluminum frame, a curved glass front, and a flexible strap that resembles a pair of ski goggles. Users control the system using a physical image capture button and a digital crown, while built-in audio pods provide spatial sound that creates the illusion of distinct audio sources. Powering the experience are the standard M2 chip and a new R1 chip dedicated to video streaming, which drive impressive micro-OLED displays capable of packing 64 pixels into the space of a single iPhone pixel.
To address the opaque visor, Apple includes a front-facing display feature called "EyeSight" that shows a digital representation of the wearer's eyes to people in the room. This system relies on an initial facial scan that also generates a personalized avatar for interacting with other headset users. Additionally, Apple partners with Zeiss to offer custom prescription glass inserts, eliminating the need for wearers to use their standard glasses inside the device.
