Apple reveals visionOS 2 at WWDC 2024, introducing significant upgrades to its Vision Pro operating system. The update uses artificial intelligence to transform standard 2D photos into interactive spatial experiences. Additionally, users navigate the interface more intuitively by simply tapping to return to the home screen or flipping their hand over to access the control center and notifications.
The upgrade enhances productivity by expanding the Mac virtual display feature with higher resolutions, larger sizes, and mouse support later this year. Travel mode also receives an upgrade by adding support for train rides. To grow the platform's ecosystem, Apple introduces new developer tools like volumetric APIs for running two apps simultaneously and TabletopKit for creating interactive board games on flat surfaces.
Apple Immersive Video, the 180-degree 8K video format for the headset, expands through new partnerships with Red Bull for a sports series and an upcoming scripted feature. The company also collaborates with hardware makers like Canon and BlackMagic to improve the workflow for creating immersive content. Vision Pro owners receive the visionOS 2 update completely free later in late 2024.
