Argo AI invests $15 million over five years to establish the Carnegie Mellon University Argo AI Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research. The Ford-backed company aims to accelerate the development of self-driving technology by focusing specifically on advanced perception and decision-making algorithms for autonomous vehicles.
This financial commitment follows the release of Argoverse, a free collection of curated data and high-definition maps that Argo AI provides to academic researchers. Both the new research lab and the Argoverse dataset exist to encourage broader academic study and spark breakthroughs in how self-driving cars identify, track, and predict the movement of objects on the road.
The new center builds upon a natural relationship, as Argo AI operates its headquarters close to the university and its founders possess deep ties to CMU. Co-founder Peter Rander earned his advanced degrees at CMU and previously worked alongside CEO Bryan Salesky at the university's National Robotics Engineering Center before the pair went on to found Argo AI in 2016.
