The production-ready processor targets AI data centers for inference tasks and relies on the company's Neoverse family of CPU IP cores. Meta serves as the first customer and development partner for this new hardware, with OpenAI, Cerebras, and Cloudflare also joining as launch partners.
This historic shift means the SoftBank-owned company now competes directly alongside its traditional licensees like Nvidia and Apple. Instead of designing a graphics processing unit (GPU) like many AI hardware makers, Arm focuses on a CPU to handle thousands of distributed data center tasks. The company emphasizes that CPUs act as the pacing element of modern infrastructure by managing memory, scheduling workloads, and keeping distributed AI systems running efficiently at scale.
The release of this custom processor arrives at a time when global CPU shortages are driving up computer prices and extending wait times for products from rivals like Intel and AMD. By bringing its own silicon to market, Arm positions itself to capitalize on the surging demand for data center components. The company begins taking orders for the chip immediately, signaling a rapid transition from development to commercial availability.
