The 101st Airborne tests the technology by flying a drone over a mock city at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, and the Army also deploys it in Iraq for non-combat purposes. Now that the patent filing is complete, the Defense Department's commercial tech transfer organization, TechLink, helps negotiate the commercialization of this fast-mapping system.
The technology does not aim to replace lidar or ground-based mapping systems, but instead works alongside them to provide adaptable solutions. By generating accurate depth data directly from standard aerial imagery, the system eliminates the need to send massive amounts of data to a central location or involve human experts.
