Audi Introduces GLOSA Tech to Help Drivers Catch Every Green Light
Audi rolls out a new vehicle-to-infrastructure feature called GLOSA that recommends driving speeds to help motorists hit consecutive green lights. The system aims to reduce traffic stops, lower emissions, and save fuel in select U.S. cities.
Audi introduces a new vehicle-to-infrastructure feature called GLOSA, or Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory, which helps drivers catch every green light. Building on the automaker's existing traffic light-reading technology that launched in 2016, this new system takes the basic "time to green" data a step further by calculating and displaying the exact speed a driver should maintain to pass through an intersection without stopping.
The system works by combining real-time traffic signal data with the vehicle's current location, distance to the stop line, local speed limits, and signal timing plans. By providing this continuous speed recommendation to the driver, GLOSA aims to drastically reduce the number of stops at red lights, which in turn decreases the amount of time drivers spend stuck in traffic and helps lower vehicle emissions while boosting fuel savings.
Currently, this technology is available across more than 4,700 intersections in 13 U.S. metropolitan areas, including cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Las Vegas. However, the feature remains limited as it requires an Audi connect PRIME paid subscription and is only compatible with select 2017, 2018, and newer models, though Audi plans to roll out additional V2I capabilities like optimized navigation routing in the future.
