Aurora Innovation introduces a small test fleet of custom self-driving Toyota Siennas on the roads of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The hybrid electric vehicles navigate both highways and suburban streets, carrying the exact same hardware and software that powers the company's Class 8 autonomous trucks. This shared technology stack allows Aurora to demonstrate a key competitive advantage by easily transferring its core driving system between the freight and passenger markets.
The unveiling marks a significant step toward the company's planned late 2024 launch of Aurora Connect, a driver-as-a-service ride-hail product. Rather than building a standalone app, Aurora integrates its driverless vehicles directly into existing ride-hail networks like Uber. When a customer requests a ride through these partner apps, the system automatically dispatches either an autonomous Aurora vehicle or a human-driven car depending on the specific route and availability.
Aurora relies on Uber's detailed marketplace data to accelerate its commercialization strategy and optimize its deployment plan. This close relationship stems from Aurora's 2020 acquisition of Uber's self-driving unit, a partnership that currently extends to hauling goods for Uber Freight in Texas. As Aurora prepares to enter the competitive robotaxi space alongside rivals like Motional, it focuses on creating a seamless hybrid model that blends autonomous cars with human drivers to meet growing consumer demand.
