Automattic Acquires WPAI to Lead WordPress AI Integration

WordPress parent company Automattic acquires AI startup WPAI to enhance the platform's artificial intelligence capabilities. The WPAI founding team joins Automattic to develop and integrate new AI standards directly into the WordPress ecosystem.

Automattic acquires WPAI, a startup that builds artificial intelligence solutions specifically for WordPress. WPAI currently offers several products, including CodeWP for generating WP plugins, AgentWP as an AI assistant for site builders, and WP Chat for answering WordPress-related questions. This move allows Automattic to directly incorporate specialized AI tools into its core platform.

As part of the acquisition, WPAI discontinues CodeWP and AgentWP in their current standalone forms to integrate them into Automattic’s existing offerings. The entire WPAI founding team joins Automattic to lead the company's AI initiatives. They focus on testing, building, and integrating innovative AI solutions into the WordPress ecosystem to redefine how users and developers interact with the platform.

The WPAI team plans to develop AI standards for WordPress while improving the platform's core functionality to help users build better websites. They promise to work closely with the WordPress community to implement these improvements thoughtfully while maintaining open-source values. This acquisition marks Automattic’s second AI-related purchase in two months, following the recent addition of Harper, a local grammar-checking tool for developers.
