As the autonomous vehicle industry stalls, startups are exploring alternative perception methods beyond lidar to improve vehicle safety. New approaches include vehicle-to-x tracking networks and multispectral camera systems.

Startups are increasingly looking beyond lidar for autonomous vehicle perception as the industry faces stalled progress and reduced demand. While lidar companies previously dominated the space by offering capabilities that traditional cameras lacked, new sensing and imaging methods are now emerging to both compete with and complement laser-based technology. This shift reflects a broader trend of specialization in the autonomous vehicle sector.

Eye Net exemplifies this shift with its vehicle-to-x tracking platform that leverages 5G technology to provide collision warnings between equipped vehicles and devices. The system alerts drivers to hidden hazards, such as an electric scooter approaching from behind parked cars, by detecting the positions of multiple devices in real time. By offering a white-label solution, Eye Net aims to build a large, interoperable safety network rather than relying on a single automaker to adopt the technology.

Vision systems are also seeing significant advancements, with companies like Brightway Vision developing multispectral cameras to overcome the limitations of standard RGB cameras in poor weather conditions. By pairing a standard visible-light camera with a near-infrared beamer that scans the road ahead multiple times per second, the system maintains visibility even in fog or darkness. This approach combines the strengths of both traditional and infrared cameras while eliminating the weaknesses of each individual technology.
