AWS Announces Major Updates for RDS, X-Ray, and MediaPackage
Amazon Web Services rolls out several key enhancements in October, including dedicated log volumes for RDS databases and W3C trace ID support for X-Ray. These updates give developers greater control over database performance, application tracing, and media delivery.
Amazon Web Services introduces a Dedicated Log Volume feature for Amazon RDS, targeting PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB databases. This new configuration stores latency-sensitive transaction logs on a separate, dedicated volume to improve overall database performance. The feature integrates seamlessly with Provisioned IOPS storage and serves as a recommended solution for databases utilizing 5,000 GiB or more of allocated storage.
AWS X-Ray now supports W3C format trace IDs to improve distributed tracing across complex applications. This compatibility allows developers to use trace IDs generated via OpenTelemetry and other frameworks that follow the W3C Trace Context specification. Consequently, engineering teams gain complete end-to-end trace visibility, which significantly accelerates the triaging and debugging of application issues.
In the media and workflow spaces, AWS Elemental MediaPackage expands its capabilities by allowing users to apply manifest filtering, start over, and time delay parameters directly to HLS manifests. Additionally, Amazon CodeCatalyst now supports scheduled workflow triggers, enabling teams to run automated build, test, and deployment procedures at predetermined times. Other notable October updates include new resource removal actions for AWS Application Discovery Service and Basic authentication support for outbound AS2 messages in the AWS Transfer Family.
