AWS Expands Hybrid and Machine Learning Offerings at re:Invent 2020
Andy Jassy reveals new compact AWS Outposts servers and advanced machine learning tools during the 2020 re:Invent keynote. The updates focus on bringing cloud capabilities directly to edge environments and industrial equipment.
Andy Jassy takes the stage at re:Invent 2020 to announce significant expansions to AWS hybrid cloud and edge computing capabilities. Addressing customer demand for consistent tools across all environments, he unveils two new, smaller form factors for AWS Outposts in 1U and 2U server sizes. These compact options provide the exact same APIs, control plane, and hardware as the full racks but require significantly less physical space.
The keynote highlights a major push into industrial machine learning and predictive maintenance. Jassy introduces Amazon Monitron for end-to-end equipment monitoring and Amazon Lookout for Equipment, which detects anomalies in machinery by analyzing sound, vibration, and temperature. Additionally, AWS Panorama Appliance connects to existing IP cameras to apply computer vision models, allowing businesses to enhance their physical operations without replacing current hardware.
Geographic expansion forms another core pillar of the presentation, with Jassy announcing three new AWS Local Zones in Boston, Houston, and Miami, alongside a dozen more planned for 2021. The updates also touch on specialized edge solutions like the Snow Family for rugged environments and AWS Wavelength for 5G applications. Industry-specific partnerships, including a connected vehicle initiative with Blackberry and Ivy, further illustrate how AWS helps enterprises reinvent their operations.
