AWS Introduces Unified Backup Tool for Cloud and On-Premises Data
AWS launches a new centralized service called AWS Backup that automates data protection across multiple cloud services and on-premises applications. The tool allows users to manage backup policies and retention periods from a single location.
Amazon Web Services unveils AWS Backup, a fully managed service that simplifies data protection for developers and administrators. The tool centralizes backup policies for popular AWS services such as EBS volumes, RDS databases, DynamoDB tables, and EFS file systems. By using the AWS Storage Gateway, businesses also back up their on-premises applications seamlessly to the AWS cloud.
The new service automates the snapshot process that currently exists independently across various AWS offerings. Users define specific backup policies and retention rules, including options to transition data to cold storage or delete it after a set period. Pricing remains consistent with existing individual snapshot features, though specific per-GB charges apply for EFS file system backups and restores for certain services.
AWS designs this centralized tool for builders who prefer higher-level abstractions over managing individual service configurations. While the current release limits operations to a single AWS region, the company plans to introduce cross-region backup capabilities later this year. Early adopters like State Street Corporation and Rackspace already utilize the service, though the launch presents new competition for existing third-party backup partners in the AWS ecosystem.
