AWS Launches European Sovereign Cloud with Major Expansion Plans
AWS officially launches the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany, backed by a €7.8 billion investment. The company also plans to expand this independent cloud infrastructure to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces the general availability of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new independent cloud infrastructure located entirely within the European Union. This specialized cloud operates physically and logically separate from standard AWS Regions, offering strong technical controls, sovereign assurances, and legal protections specifically designed for European governments and enterprises handling sensitive data.
The company commits to investing more than €7.8 billion in this German-based sovereign cloud, which supports an average of 2,800 full-time equivalent jobs annually. Alongside this massive financial commitment, AWS reveals plans to extend the sovereign cloud footprint across the EU by launching new sovereign AWS Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal to meet strict in-country data residency and low latency requirements.
This new offering provides European organizations with additional choices to meet stringent regional sovereignty requirements without sacrificing the full breadth of AWS services. While the existing six AWS Regions in the EU already operate with a sovereign-by-design approach, the dedicated European Sovereign Cloud delivers the highest level of operational independence and data isolation for the most security-conscious customers.
