AWS Unveils Graviton3E Arm Chip and Nitro 5 Hypervisor for High-Performance Computing

AWS introduces the Graviton3E processor optimized for high-performance computing and the Nitro 5 hardware hypervisor. These new technologies deliver major leaps in vector processing and energy efficiency for cloud workloads.

AWS unveils the Graviton3E, a new custom Arm-based chip designed specifically for high-performance computing workloads. This variant of the standard Graviton processor delivers a 35% performance boost for tasks that rely heavily on vector instructions. The new chip powers the Hpc7G instance type, which features up to 64 vCPUs and 128 GiB of memory.

For network-intensive applications, AWS also launches the c7gn instance type equipped with the Graviton3E processor. Additionally, the company updates its lineup with new Intel Ice Lake-based Xeon machines to serve a wider range of customer preferences. All of these new instance types utilize the newly announced Nitro 5 hardware hypervisor.

The Nitro 5 hypervisor doubles the transistor count of previous AWS custom chips to significantly improve overall cloud infrastructure. It promises up to 40% better performance per watt and a 60% increase in packets per second. AWS plans to make these new Hpc7G instances available to customers in early 2023.
