Bell Completes First Autonomous Flight for APT 70 Cargo Drone

Bell Helicopter achieves a major milestone as its Autonomous Pod Transport 70 (APT 70) completes its first successful autonomous flight at a Fort Worth testing facility. The prototype aircraft acts as a small vertical take-off and landing craft designed for commercial cargo transport. It carries up to 70 pounds and reaches speeds over 100 mph, making it suitable for package delivery and humanitarian rescue missions.

The drone utilizes a unique flight mechanism where its four rotors transition from a vertical to a horizontal orientation after takeoff. This tilt-rotor design allows the APT 70 to fly much faster than traditional rotor-based aircraft of a similar size. The successful test marks a significant step forward in the development of high-speed, unmanned logistics.

Bell now prepares for a NASA Systems Integration and Operationalization demo scheduled for the middle of next year to test centralized command and obstacle avoidance technologies. In addition to this U.S. demonstration, Bell partners with Japanese logistics company Yamato to launch an on-demand delivery product around the same time. These efforts highlight a strong push to integrate autonomous aircraft into commercial service.
