Benchmark Backs New Lantern's $19M Bid to Streamline Radiology Workflows

New Lantern raises $19 million in a Series A round led by Benchmark to modernize the outdated software systems that radiologists use daily. Founder Shiva Suri creates this unified platform after observing his mother, a radiologist, waste countless hours switching between clunky image libraries and reporting tools. Instead of attempting to replace doctors with AI, New Lantern focuses on automating the boring workflow tasks that consume most of a radiologist's shift.
Unlike other AI startups in the medical imaging space that concentrate on image analysis, New Lantern targets the surrounding administrative drudgery. The software combines digital image viewing and diagnostic report writing into a single cloud-based interface. By automating tasks like 3D measurements and preliminary report drafting, the platform allows doctors to dedicate their time to actual medical thinking rather than software navigation.
Benchmark partner Eric Vishria invests in the startup because it addresses the industry's actual labor shortage rather than chasing the unrealistic goal of making radiologists obsolete. New Lantern claims its software enables radiologists to complete twice as many cases in the same amount of time. The company now plans to use this new funding to disrupt legacy incumbents like GE Healthcare, Philips, and Microsoft's Nuance.
