Benchmark Raises $225M in Special Vehicles to Back Cerebras AI Chips

Benchmark Capital invests at least $225 million into AI chipmaker Cerebras through two specially created funds. The backing supports Cerebras as it reaches a $23 billion valuation and secures a massive computing deal with OpenAI.

AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems raises $1 billion in fresh capital at a $23 billion valuation, with a significant portion coming from early backer Benchmark Capital. The prominent Silicon Valley firm invests at least $225 million into this latest round by creating two separate investment vehicles called Benchmark Infrastructure. These special funds allow Benchmark to bypass its usual $450 million fund limit to strongly support the 10-year-old Nvidia rival.

Cerebras differentiates itself in the crowded AI hardware market through the sheer physical scale of its processors. Its flagship Wafer Scale Engine measures 8.5 inches on each side and packs 4 trillion transistors into a single piece of silicon, utilizing nearly an entire 300-millimeter wafer instead of traditional thumbnail-sized fragments. This unique architecture delivers 900,000 specialized cores that work in parallel, eliminating data bottlenecks and enabling AI inference tasks to run more than 20 times faster than competing systems.

This massive funding round arrives as Cerebras gains significant momentum in the competitive AI infrastructure race. The company recently signs a multi-year agreement worth over $10 billion to provide 750 megawatts of computing power to OpenAI, a partnership designed to deliver faster response times for complex AI queries through 2028. The company claims its proprietary, uniquely designed chips outperform Nvidia's offerings as it continues its path toward a public listing.
