BioNTech Buys AI Startup InstaDeep for $680 Million to Boost Cancer Drug Discovery
BioNTech acquires U.K.-based AI startup InstaDeep in a deal worth up to $680 million to advance its personalized cancer treatments. The purchase builds on a previous partnership between the two companies.
German biotech company BioNTech acquires U.K. and Tunis-based artificial intelligence startup InstaDeep for up to £562 million, marking its largest deal to date. BioNTech pays £362 million upfront through a combination of cash and company shares, with the remaining £200 million tied to InstaDeep's future performance milestones.
InstaDeep specializes in advanced machine learning techniques like reinforcement learning to solve complex enterprise challenges, ranging from optimizing shipping logistics to automating railway scheduling. BioNTech plans to leverage this AI technology to significantly improve its drug discovery process and develop personalized treatments tailored specifically to individual cancer patients.
This acquisition grows out of a multi-year strategic collaboration that began in 2019, when the two companies established a joint AI innovation lab to develop novel immunotherapies. BioNTech CEO Uğur Şahin states that bringing InstaDeep into the company integrates rapidly evolving AI capabilities directly into their efforts to create computational solutions for personalized cancer drugs.
