Black Forest Labs Launches With $31 Million to Advance Generative AI

Black Forest Labs emerges from stealth to push the boundaries of image and video generation, debuting its FLUX.1 text-to-image suite. The startup, founded by creators of Stable Diffusion, raises $31 million in seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz.

Black Forest Labs officially launches with a mission to develop state-of-the-art generative AI models for images and videos. The company views generative AI as a fundamental building block for future technologies and aims to make these tools widely accessible to educate the public and build trust in model safety.

The founding team consists of distinguished AI researchers who previously create landmark technologies like VQGAN, Latent Diffusion, and the Stable Diffusion model family. As a first step toward their goal, the company releases the FLUX.1 suite of models, which pushes the current frontiers of text-to-image synthesis.

To support this ambitious vision, Black Forest Labs successfully closes a $31 million Series Seed funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The round sees notable participation from angel investors and AI experts, with additional follow-up investments from General Catalyst and MätchVC to fuel the development of industry-standard generative media.
