Blue Origin leads a newly formed four-company team to design and build a human-capable lunar lander for NASA's Artemis program. Founder Jeff Bezos brings together former rivals Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Draper to create a unified bid ahead of a fast-approaching November proposal deadline. This coalition combines the individual lunar lander concepts that Lockheed Martin and Blue Origin previously developed separately.

The partnership divides the complex spacecraft into specialized components for each firm to build. Blue Origin acts as the primary contractor by constructing the descent vehicle, Blue Moon, while Lockheed Martin designs a reusable ascent module to carry astronauts back to orbit. Northrop Grumman provides a transfer vehicle based on its Cygnus spacecraft to move the crew from the lunar Gateway, and Draper develops the critical descent guidance software.

The ambitious lander system faces significant time constraints as NASA aims to return astronauts to the moon by 2024. The space agency currently lags behind schedule on major hardware development for the Artemis mission, leaving the winning team with almost no time for uncrewed test flights. While the lander primarily utilizes Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, engineers design the system to remain compatible with other launch vehicles as well.
