Bluesky now allows users to share videos of up to 60 seconds in length directly on its decentralized social network. This update brings the platform closer to feature parity with X and other competitors like Instagram Threads and Mastodon. Users can include one video per post, attach subtitles, and toggle the default autoplay setting off if they prefer.
The company implements several safeguards to manage the new feature and prevent abuse. Users must verify their email addresses to upload videos, and they face daily limits of 25 videos or 10GB of data. Bluesky processes uploads through Hive and Thorn to detect illegal material and enforce content warnings, while also giving users the ability to filter out adult content through customizable moderation controls.
This addition significantly enhances Bluesky's ability to host engaging conversations around breaking news, politics, and pop culture. It builds upon previous updates that added third-party embeds for platforms like YouTube and Spotify. By integrating native video, Bluesky continues to position itself as a flexible, user-controlled alternative to traditional centralized social media platforms.
