BMW and Daimler Partner to Build Scalable Level 4 Autonomous Platform
BMW and Daimler team up in a non-exclusive partnership to co-develop automated driving technologies up to SAE Level 4. The automakers plan to implement the results of this scalable platform in their consumer vehicles starting in 2024.
BMW and Daimler join forces in a long-term, non-exclusive partnership to co-develop automated driving technologies ranging from advanced driver assistance systems up to SAE Level 4 autonomy. This collaboration focuses on building a scalable platform that handles features like smart cruise control and automated parking, eventually culminating in full self-driving capabilities where human intervention is not required under specific conditions.
The two automakers design this platform to be open and highly collaborative, making it available for licensing to other original equipment manufacturers and tech providers. While this initial agreement covers specific driving domains, ongoing talks between BMW and Daimler explore expanding their cooperation to include highly automated driving in denser urban environments and complex city conditions.
Both companies continue to pursue independent autonomous projects alongside this joint venture, with Daimler running a Level 4 urban pilot with Bosch this year and BMW integrating Level 3 tech into its iNEXT models in 2021. However, the direct results of this shared development effort officially make their way into the respective consumer vehicle lineups of both BMW and Daimler starting in the year 2024.
