BMW and Toyota Join Forces to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles

BMW and Toyota are partnering to produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2025, blending Toyota's fuel cell expertise with BMW's flexible vehicle platforms. The collaboration serves as a strategic hedge for both automakers as they navigate the transition to zero-emission transportation.

BMW and Toyota partner to produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles starting in 2025, according to a new report. BMW sales chief Pieter Nota confirms the automakers will begin selling these jointly developed cars to leverage Toyota's deep experience with fuel cell technology through its Mirai sedan. The two companies already share a successful development history, having previously collaborated on the iX5 Hydrogen and sports cars like the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra.

These hydrogen vehicles offer distinct advantages over traditional battery-electric cars, including three-to-four-minute refueling times and longer driving ranges. However, a significant lack of public hydrogen fueling infrastructure outside of California presents a major hurdle for mass adoption. Despite these challenges, BMW remains committed to an all-of-the-above strategy, with CEO Oliver Zipse revealing that the company's upcoming Neue Klasse platform will accommodate hydrogen power alongside pure battery electric propulsion.

This collaboration allows both automakers to effectively hedge their investments in zero-emission technology as the market evolves. BMW currently aims for electric vehicles to make up half of its corporate brand sales by the end of the decade. Consumers will see if this flexible platform strategy succeeds or repeats the delays of BMW's previous multi-powertrain efforts when the new 3-series sedans and X3 SUVs hit the market in 2025.
