Border Gateway Protocol Failure Causes Global Facebook Outage
A massive configuration error in Facebook's internal backbone cascades into a total BGP and DNS failure, effectively severing the social network from the global internet.
Cloudflare initially investigates a potential issue with its 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver after noticing Facebook domain lookups fail, but engineers quickly realize a much larger event is unfolding. Social media erupts as confirmation arrives that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are completely offline, with their DNS names failing to resolve and their infrastructure IP addresses becoming entirely unreachable.
The root cause traces back to a catastrophic Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) failure rather than a simple DNS problem. BGP acts as the essential routing mechanism that allows different networks across the internet to find and communicate with each other, essentially acting as the glue that binds the global network of networks together.
Because Facebook stops advertising its presence via BGP, internet service providers and other networks completely lose the path to Facebook's servers, making the platforms totally inaccessible. Facebook later confirms that an internal backbone configuration change triggers this cascade, which ultimately severs the company's external connectivity and hinders internal recovery efforts.
