Boston Dynamics wows the public once again as its five-foot-tall humanoid robot, Atlas, successfully completes a complex parkour obstacle course at the company's Waltham facility. The viral video shows two Atlas robots running across balance beams, jumping onto slanted platforms, and sticking impressive backflips with remarkable agility.
However, the robotics company quickly follows up the polished footage with a behind-the-scenes blooper reel that highlights the messy reality of robotic training. The unreleased clips reveal Atlas tripping over its own feet, failing backflip landings, and even spewing smoke as it crashes to the ground during practice runs.
Atlas team leader Scott Kuindersma explains that these frequent crashes are an essential part of the development process rather than mere accidents. He compares the robot's training to a human athlete practicing a difficult routine, noting that it takes dozens or hundreds of attempts to perfect the choreographed sequence and expand the machine's capabilities.
