Boston Dynamics expands commercial sales of its Spot robot to Canada, the EU, and the U.K. as CEO Robert Playter reports that sales double in recent months. The quadruped robot, known for climbing stairs and navigating rough terrain, maintains the same pricing structure as the U.S. market across these new regions.
The company sells the base Spot Explorer developer kit for $74,500 and limits initial purchases to two units per business, while offering Academic and Enterprise tiers for larger or institutional needs. A variety of add-ons are available, ranging from extra batteries to a $34,570 lidar and camera system, highlighting Spot's modular design.
COVID-19 drives increased interest in Spot as a tool to reduce human contact, following a successful hospital deployment earlier in the year. To further enhance autonomous capabilities, Boston Dynamics plans to release a self-charging dock in early 2021 alongside a new robot arm for the Enterprise version.
