Boston Dynamics Upgrades Spot Robot with Advanced Sensors and Inspection Software

Boston Dynamics enhances its Spot robot with new thermal, acoustic, and LiDAR sensors alongside smarter software for automated industrial inspections.

Boston Dynamics expands the capabilities of its Spot robot with new sensors and software designed for industrial environments. With over 1,000 units deployed across more than 35 countries, Spot remains the leading quadruped in industrial applications. These latest updates reflect direct feedback from customers who use the robot for complex inspection tasks.

The hardware upgrades include three new imaging payload options for Spot. Workers can now attach a thermal camera to detect overheating equipment, a Fluke SV600 acoustic imager to locate abnormal noises like air leaks, and an enhanced autonomy payload featuring a LiDAR camera. These tools allow the robot to gather more comprehensive data while navigating hazardous or hard-to-reach areas.

On the software side, Boston Dynamics introduces a smarter remote inspection system that organizes spatially tagged data collected during patrols. The updated software enables users to set specific alerts for individual sensor readings, process multiple temperature zones within a single thermal image, and automatically extract values from analog gauges using Levatas technology. These improvements make it significantly easier for facilities to automate routine monitoring and catch potential equipment failures early.
