ByteDance Expands Beyond Apps with Planned Smartphone Launch
TikTok parent company ByteDance is reportedly developing its own smartphone to boost user acquisition amid slowing ad revenue growth in China.
TikTok parent company ByteDance is reportedly branching out into the hardware realm by planning to develop its own smartphone. According to sources cited by the Financial Times, this move serves as a strategic push to secure new user acquisition channels. The Beijing-based internet giant declines to comment on the rumors, but the leap to hardware aligns with common growth strategies used by other Chinese tech firms.
This hardware expansion comes at a crucial time for the startup, as it experiences the pressure of missed revenue targets due to slowing ad spending in China. By creating a dedicated device, ByteDance ensures direct access to consumers without relying solely on app store algorithms or third-party phone manufacturers. This approach mirrors tactics previously used by companies like Meitu, which builds phones pre-loaded with its photo-editing software.
Clues about this hardware ambition surface through Bytedance's recent acquisition of patents and employees from Smartisan, a struggling phone maker. Although Bytedance officially claims the Smartisan deal focuses on education business, the acquired hardware expertise clearly lays the groundwork for a proprietary smartphone. Other Chinese tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent have historically pursued similar paths through custom Android operating systems or strategic hardware partnerships to expand their digital ecosystems.
