Canoo Unveils Microbus-Style Electric Vehicle with Subscription Model

Los Angeles startup Canoo reveals its debut electric vehicle that prioritizes interior space and offers a Netflix-like monthly subscription. The uniquely designed seven-seater hits the road in 2021 using an adaptable skateboard platform.

Los Angeles-based startup Canoo unveils its first electric vehicle, departing from traditional EV designs with a shape that resembles a classic VW Microbus. The company completes the design and engineering of this debut model in just 19 months and prepares for production through an undisclosed contract manufacturer in Michigan. Under the leadership of Ulrich Kranz, who recently took over day-to-day operations, the startup focuses heavily on maximizing interior space and overall value.

Beta test vehicles are currently available at the company's Los Angeles headquarters for partners and prospective customers to evaluate. The first cars officially hit the road in 2021, launching initially in the Los Angeles market. Beyond selling its own vehicles, Canoo plans to license its underlying "skateboard" platform to other companies that want to build custom cabins on top of the electric chassis.

Canoo introduces a completely new business model for the auto industry by offering its seven-passenger vehicles exclusively through a monthly subscription service. This all-inclusive fee covers perks like vehicle registration, maintenance, insurance management, and charging access, all managed through a single smartphone app. The company compares this approach to the convenience and affordability of a Netflix subscription, aiming to simplify the entire car ownership experience.
