CCIA Europe Urges EU Lawmakers to Avoid Asymmetric AI Rules

CCIA Europe sends a letter to the Spanish Presidency and European Parliament negotiators ahead of the upcoming trilogue discussions on the EU AI Act. The tech group urges lawmakers to stick to the original risk-based approach instead of introducing an expansive asymmetric framework to regulate foundation models and general-purpose AI (GPAI).
The organization argues that the AI Act should not include obligations that unfairly target a select few providers or models regardless of their actual risk or use. CCIA Europe points out that rapid advancements in the AI market mean any asymmetric regulation based on current conditions will likely become outdated within a few months or years.
Furthermore, the letter highlights that there is no evidence linking AI risks to the size of the developing company. Smaller AI models from smaller companies often have the same or even greater impact than larger ones, meaning regulations must focus entirely on how the technology is used rather than who builds it.
